Comments our volunteers have received from FL Legislators on how they feel about money in politics:
"Of course I believe the influence of money in politics is a problem and of course I would be willing to be part of the solution."
David Simmons (R-District 22)
"I do believe that the large amounts of money going to fund political campaigns are causing problems. There needs to be reform to the way political campaigns are funded. For example, but without limitation, I believe we need to make sure political contributions are spent on valid campaign expenses, not the candidate’s personal living expenses. We also need to review how corporations can influence campaigns.
In 2010, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in the case of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, that the First Amendment prohibits the government from restricting independent political expenditures by corporations and unions. While I personally believe that Congress and the states should and do have a right to restrict political expenditures of corporations and unions without violating free speech, we must at present follow the ruling of the Supreme Court.
At this time, I am reviewing options to take action in the upcoming session. Committee meetings will start in December, and something needs to be done."
Mark Danish (D - District 63 - House)
I appreciate you taking the time to contact my office and I apologize for the late response. I believe that the money in politics should be transparent and donor limitations should be honored. I will support legislation to reform and improve transparency in politics. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my office.
